Ernakulam district boasts a thriving agricultural sector of great significance to its economy and the livelihoods of a substantial population. Its favorable climate and fertile soil create an ideal environment for cultivating a diverse range of crops. These include coconut, rubber, tapioca, banana, as well as spices like black pepper and cardamom.
The Agriculture department is responsible for designing and executing various programs aimed at boosting the production of both food and cash crops within the State. It engages in activities among farmers to promote scientific cultivation methods and plant protection. Additionally, it facilitates the distribution of high-yielding seed varieties, seedlings, planting materials, and plant protection chemicals. The department also shapes policies and initiatives concerning farmers’ access to credit. It encompasses three pivotal functions: Agricultural Research, Education, and Extension, and operates agricultural farms alongside an engineering wing.
Coconut holds a prominent position among Ernakulam district’s crops, with its trees covering a substantial portion of the agricultural land. The district is a major exporter of coconut oil, with numerous coconut oil mills in operation. Rubber cultivation is similarly widespread in the region, with extensive rubber plantations. Tapioca stands out as another significant crop, with Ernakulam district being a leading producer of tapioca within Kerala.
In addition to these crops, Ernakulam district gains recognition for its spices, notably black pepper and cardamom. These spices, widely used in the food industry, find their way to various global markets. The district’s repertoire extends to fruit and vegetable cultivation, encompassing papaya, pineapple, banana, jackfruit, and various leafy greens.
The agriculture sector in Ernakulam district thrives due to its robust infrastructure, supported by various agricultural research institutions, training centers, and markets. Krishi Bhavans, acting as hubs for farmers seeking information on farming techniques, pest control, and market trends, are scattered across the district. Furthermore, a well-established network of agricultural markets ensures fair pricing and sales opportunities for farmers.
Heading the District Office is the Principal Agricultural Officer, assisted by a team including Deputy Director, Assistant Director, Assistant Principal Agricultural Officer, Technical Assistants, Agricultural Officers, Agricultural Assistants, Senior Superintendents, Junior Superintendents, Clerks, and Office Attendants. The Principal Agricultural Officer also convenes the District Level Committee of the Kerala State Paddy and Wet Land Act 2008.
